No, Not Hair Pulling

Oil pulling or oil swishing, in alternative medicine is a procedure that involves swishing oil in the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits.

It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita, where it is called Kavala Gandoosha/Kavala Graha.

For oil pulling therapy, a tablespoon (or teaspoon for children between 5-15 years of age) of any edible oil is given in the mouth and is sipped, sucked, and pulled between the teeth for 10 to 15 minutes. The viscous oil turns thin and milky white. The oil should not be swallowed as it contains bacteria and toxins. Oil pulling therapy should be followed by brushing the teeth and is preferably done on an empty stomach in the morning.

The claims of the health benefits of oil pulling, ranging from headache and migraine to diabetes and asthma, are anecdotal until Asokan S and colleagues conducted a randomized, controlled, triple-blind study 20 age-matched adolescent boys with plaque-induced gingivitis1. The results of this study published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research confirmed the positive effects of oil pulling plaque-induced gingivitis.
Gingivitis is due to the long-term effects of plaque deposits. Plaque is a sticky material made of bacteria, mucus, and food debris that develops on the exposed parts of the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth decay. If you do not remove plaque, it turns into a hard deposit called tartar that becomes trapped at the base of the tooth. Plaque and tartar irritate and inflame the gums. Bacteria and the toxins they produce cause the gums to become infected, swollen, and tender.

Bacteria get into the bloodstream hundreds of times a year, not only from tooth brushing, but also from other routine daily activities like chewing food. But ulcerated gingival (gum) tissue surrounding the teeth provide an entry to the bloodstream for up to 700 different types of bacteria found in our mouths.

When bacteria get into the bloodstream they encounter tiny fragments called platelets that clot blood when you get a cut. By sticking to the platelets bacteria cause them to clot inside the blood vessel, partially blocking it. This prevents the blood flow back to the heart and we run the risk of suffering a heart attack2.

Scientists have known for some time that a protein associated with inflammation (called CRP) is elevated in people who are at risk for heart disease. But where's the inflammation coming from? A new research study by Italian and U.K. scientists shows that infected gums may be one place3. It doesn't matter how fit, slim or healthy you are, you're adding to your chances of getting heart disease by having bad teeth.

See your dentist today, Floss regularly, increase your intake of vege and fruits, and start pulling today.

Sexual And Overall Health

Sexual health is inseparable from overall health. If you improve your general state of health, you will invariably improve your sex function. 1

At the same time, the connection between sex and health is a two-way street. In other words, enhancing sexual vitality and improving your sex life will also have a positive impact on your overall health.

Exercise Your Brain Too

A study that was presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 61st Annual Meeting in Seattle, April 25 to May 2, 2009 found that reading books, playing games, participating in computer activities and doing craft activities such as pottery or quilting led to a 30 to 50 percent decrease in the risk of developing memory loss compared to people who did not do those activities. People who watched television for less than seven hours a day in later years were 50 percent less likely to develop memory loss than people who watched for more than seven hours a day.

The study involved 1320 people between the ages of 70 & 89

“This study is exciting because it demonstrates that aging does not need to be a passive process,” says Yonas Geda, M.D., a neuropsychiatrist at Mayo Clinic and author of this study. “By simply engaging in cognitive exercise, you can protect against future memory loss.”

Zestz for LAUGHS

Sally and Bob, moved to Texas.

Bob always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, “Notice anything different about me?”

Sally looked him over, “Nope.”

Frustrated, Bob stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots.

Again he asked Sally, a little louder this time, “Notice anything different NOW?”

Sally looked up and exclaimed, “Bob, what’s different? It’s hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it’ll be hanging down again tomorrow!”

Furious, Bob yelled, “And do you know why it’s hanging down, Sally?”

“Nope,” she replied.

“It’s hanging down because it’s looking at my new boots!”

Without changing her expression Sally replied, “Shoulda bought a hat, Bob. Shoulda bought a hat.”

Zestz JAZZ

Noryn Aziz
Already a veteran on the international stage in her 20s, and a staple among older artistes and co-billers, it is her warm, age-old voice that draws in a universal acquaintance. The perfect captured moment of this defining element of Noryn's persona was her memorable slot at the International Java Jazz Fest in Jakarta in March: legends and heavyweights from Patti Austin, Tania Maria and Bob James Quintet to Tower of Power, Incognito and the Brand New Heavies tipped their hats to sing a small mention of praise and recognition for their young fellow performer who seemed to come from out of nowhere.

A familiar face at the local Sunrise Jazz Festival for the past six years in a row, Noryn's versatility and demand traverses styles, status and degrees of exclusivity, meaning she could headline Sunrise - the creme de la creme of annual jazz jams - one night, a Tatler gala shindig the next, motor shows and the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week a week later.

If it's a big night to remember with oodles at stake, Noryn delivers. For the best of them, she's always been a name to call, and with the release of her debut album wil be a big name in her own terms.

Vinegar, a Fat-fighter?

Vinegar — a staple in oil-and-vinegar salad dressings, pickles, and other foods —has also been used as a folk medicine since ancient times.

Modern scientific research suggests that acetic acid, the main component of vinegar, may help control blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and fat accumulation.

A new study by Tomoo Kondo and colleagues found evidence that vinegar can help prevent accumulation of body fat and weight gain.

Laboratory mice fed a high-fat diet and given acetic acid developed significantly less body fat (up to 10 percent less) than other mice. And this is achieved without changing food consumption or skeletal muscle weight.

They went on to explain that “significant increases were observed in the expressions of genes for peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) and for fatty-acid-oxidation- and thermogenesis-related proteins: acetyl-CoA oxidase (ACO), carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 (CPT-1), and uncoupling protein-2 (UCP-2), in the liver of the AcOH-treatment groups. PPARalpha, ACO, CPT-1, and UCP-2 gene expressions were increased in vitro by acetate addition to HepG2 cells. However, the effects were not observed in cells depleted of alpha2 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) by siRNA.

In our nutshell, it means that acetic acid fights fat by turning on genes for fatty acid oxidation enzymes. The genes churn out proteins involved in breaking down fats, thus suppressing body fat accumulation in the body.

Exercise and Smoking Cessation

We know that exercise improves our mood, combats chronic diseases, helps us manage our weight, boosts our energy level, and promotes better sleep.
Exercise can also put
the spark back into our sex life.1

A new study from the University of Exeter shows for the first time that exercise can reduce cravings and responses to smoking cues.

Kate Janse Van Rensburg et al2 using the latest eye-tracking technology confirmed that exercise can lessen the power of cigarettes and smoking-related images to grab the attention of smokers.

20 moderately heavy smokers, who had abstained from cigarettes for 15 hours before the trial, were recruited for this study. On two separate occasions, participants were shown smoking-related and neutral images, and then spent 15 minutes either sitting or exercising on a stationary bike at a moderate intensity. Afterwards, they were again shown the images.

The eye tracking computer was able to show not only the length of time people looked at smoking-related images but also how quickly pictures of cigarettes could grab their attention, compared with non-smoking matched images.

The study showed an 11% difference between the time the participants spent looking at the smoking-related images after exercise, compared with after sitting. Also, after exercise, participants took longer to look at smoking-related images.

Exercise, therefore, appears to reduce interest in and salience of smoking cues.

Smoking-related images can be powerful triggers for smokers who are abstaining. While we are no longer faced with advertisements for cigarettes, smokers are still faced with seeing people smoking on television, in photographs or in person which makes it more difficult for them to quit.

Come in and ask our pharmacists about the new medication for smoking cessation.

Tai Chi and Walking

Other than cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) account for major mortality and morbidity rates in many countries, including Malaysia. Increasing energy expenditure through regular exercise has been found to lower the risk of CVD and to control hyperlipidaemia and obesity.

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that combines diaphragmatic breathing and relaxation with gentle circular, fluid movements.

Health Benefits of Tai Chi

A number of studies have investigated the positive health effects of Tai Chi for patients as well as for healthy individuals. Such health benefits include improvement in: aerobic fitness and energy metabolism, muscular strength and balance, and mental control. However, compared to walking exercise, Tai Chi is intuitively perceived to be of lower exercise intensity and metabolic cost.

Similar Beneficial Efects

Now, Hui SS, Woo J and Kwok T (1) have shown that 3-month Tai Chi and walking exercise training in middle-aged Chinese in HongKong produced significant and similar beneficial effects on body composition, aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, fasting blood glucose, resting metabolic rate, and perceived health.

Both Tai Chi and walking exercise resulted in reductions of approximately 1 kg in body weight and 2.5 cm in waist circumference in men. In women, corresponding reductions were 0.33 kg after Tai Chi and 0.87 kg after walking exercise and about 5 cm of waist circumference for both forms of exercise.

Similar significant reductions in % body fat and sum of skinfolds were also noted after Tai Chi and walking exercise in both men and women.

Regarding aerobic fitness in men, after Tai Chi VO2max improved 22% and after walking eercise it improved 21%. In women, corresponding figures were 15% after Tai Chi and 20% after walking exercise.

Similar results were noted for changes in fasting blood glucose.

More importantly, other than the physiological parameters described above, perceived health status also improved significantly (24-29% after walking exercise, and13-14% after Tai Chi).

While Tai Chi and walking both elicited significant cardiorespiratory responses and energy expenditure to the moderate intensity level, walking exercise elicited about 46% higher metabolic cost than Tai Chi exercise.

When exercise intensity and safety is a concern, Tai Chi appears more desirable than walking exercise since it elicits lower metabolic demands but yields similar levels of health benefits.

Internal Energy

Why Tai Chi produces similar health and fitness benefits at a lower metabolic demand compared to WLK is not known. However, it is the belief of Chinese martial arts practitioners that there is an internal energy called ‘qi’ that circulates inside the body when practising Tai Chi. The slow and regular breathing technique combined with slow but steady muscular movement is believed to produce ‘qi’ that stimulates long-term changes in physical fitness.

2. VO2 max, or maximal oxygen uptake, is one factor that can determine an athlete's capacity to perform sustained exercise and is linked to aerobic endurance. VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise. It is measured as "milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight." sportsmedicine.about.com

Zestz : Celebrating the PRESENT

"So the single most vital step on your journey toward enlightenment is this: learn to disidentify from your mind. Every time you create a gap in the stream of mind, the light of your consciousness grows stronger. One day you may catch yourself smiling at the voice in your head, as you would smile at the antics of a child. This means that you no longer take the content of your mind all that seriously, as your sense of self does not depend on it."

Zestz for LAUGHS

A guy goes to a travel agent and books a two-week cruise for himself and his girlfriend.

A couple days before the cruise, the travel agent calls and says the cruise has been canceled, but he can get them on a three-day cruise instead. The guy says "OK," and goes to the pharmacy to buy six Dramamine Tablets* and three condoms.

Next day, the agent calls back and says he now can book a five-day cruise. The guy says he'll take it. Returns to the same pharmacy and buys four more Dramamine and two more condoms.

The following day, the travel agent calls again and says he can now book an eight-day cruise. Guy says, "OK," and goes back to the pharmacy and asks for six more Dramamine and three more condoms.

Finally, the pharmacist asks, "Look, if it makes you sick, how come you keep doing it?"

Dramamine is a travel sickness medicine containing 50mg dimenhydrinate in each tablet; usually, for adults, two tablets are to be taken half an hour before the start of the journey.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Cut Risk of Advanced Prostate Cancer

Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

Omega-3 fatty acids appear protective against advanced prostate cancer, and even in men who carry a particular variant in the COX-2 inflammatory gene that is known to raise the risk of the disease. Previous research has shown protection by omega-3 fatty acids against prostate cancer, but this study by John S. Witte et al (1) is one of the first studies to show protection against advanced prostate cancer and interaction with COX-2.

The researchers studied 466 men diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer and 478 healthy age- and ethnicity-matched controls. Diet was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire and researchers genotyped nine COX-2 single nucleotide polymorphisms.

Men who consumed the highest amount of long chain omega-3 fatty acids had a 63 percent reduced risk of aggressive prostate cancer compared to men with the lowest amount of long chain omega-3 fatty acids.

The researchers then assessed the effect of omega-3 fatty acid among men with the variant rs4647310 in COX-2, a known inflammatory gene. Men with low long chain omega-3 fatty acid intake and this variant had a more than five-fold increased risk of advanced prostate cancer. But men with high intake of omega-3 fatty acids had a substantially reduced risk, even if they carried the COX-2 variant.

"The COX-2 increased risk of disease was essentially reversed by increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake by a half a gram per day," said Witte. "If you want to think of the overall inverse association in terms of fish, where omega-3 fatty acids are commonly derived, the strongest effect was seen from eating dark fish such as salmon one or more times per week."

Erectile Dysfunction and Smoking

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, lung disease, and premature death.

Several epidemiologic studies have also suggested that cigarette smoking is related to increased risk of erectile dysfunction in men. Many of these studies however, were conducted among patients with established atherosclerotic vascular disease. Atherosclerotic vascular disease and its risk factors, including diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia, are major underlying risk factors for erectile dysfunction and these factors were not measured and not adjusted for in previous studies.

Jiang He, Professor of Epidemiology at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and his colleagues examined the association between cigarette smoking and risk of erectile dysfunction among 7,684 Chinese men aged 35–74 years without clinical vascular disease.

The team found that there was a significant statistical link between the number of cigarettes that men smoked and the likelihood they would experience erectile dysfunction. The association between smoking and erectile dysfunction was even stronger in participants with diabetes. An estimated 22.7 percent of erectile dysfunction cases among Chinese men might be attributable to cigarette smoking, says the study.

Although erectile dysfunction is not a life-threatening condition, it compromises well-being and quality of life. The Tulane study results suggest that smoking prevention should be an important approach for reducing the risk of erectile dysfunction.

Heartfelt News

Being physically fit, not smoking, and maintaining a normal waist girth is associated with lower risk of CHD events, and CVD and all-cause mortality in men

Analysing the medical evaluations of 23,657 men aged between 30 and 79 years, Drs Chong-Do Lee, Xuemei Sui and Steven N. Blair(1) concluded that smokers who were unfit and overweight cut their life expectancy by an average of 14.2 years.

“To address health promotion and disease prevention strategies, it is important to increase healthy low-risk populations, which is a key to CHD (coronary heart disease) prevention,” the study’s authors wrote.

They found that the three factors contributed to a 59 per cent lower risk of CHD events, a 77 per cent lower risk of death from CVD (cardiovascular disease) and a 69 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality, compared with men with none of these low-risk factors.

Men with a normal waist girth(2) and who were physically fit and not smoking had a 59% lower risk of CHD events (95% confidence interval [CI], 39%-72%), , a 77 per cent lower risk of death from CVD (cardiovascular disease) and a 69% lower risk of all-cause mortality (95% CI, 60%-76%), compared with men with none of these low-risk factors.

Men with two or three combined low-risk factors had lower blood lipid levels (total cholesterol, lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides), blood pressures (systolic and diastolic), fasting glucose levels and lower frequencies of diabetes and cigarette smoking, all of which may contribute to slowing the progression of early atherosclerosis.

Carcinogen - FREE BBQ

Carcinogenic compounds are formed when meat and fish are barbecued, grilled, broiled or fried.

There’s a way to reduce the significant risk of exposure to some of the carcinogens formed during high temperature cooking by just marinating the meat with some spices.

Smith JS and his coworkers1 found that marinating with rosemary extracts can inhibit the formation of these carcinogenic compounds in cooked beef patties by 61 to 79 percent. This confirmed the 1998 findings by Murkovic M et al2.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus offtcinalis L.), is a plant native to the Mediterranean. Several compounds within the lipid fraction of rosemary have antioxidant properties. One of these, rosmanol, is an odourless and tasteless constituent that has antioxidant activity about four times greater than compounds sometimes added to foods during commercial production such as butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylhydroxyanisol (BHA)3.

If you like a more pungent marinade, Thai spices can inhibit the formation even further, by about 40 to 43 percent4.
