Prevent Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown nails may develop for many reasons. Some cases are congenital—the nail is just too large for the toe. Trauma, such as stubbing the toe or having the toe stepped on, may also cause an ingrown nail. However, the most common cause is tight shoe wear or improper grooming and trimming of the nail.

The Zestzfulness Team suggests the following to prevent ingrown toenails, unless the problem is congenital:Wear comfortable shoes with adequate room for the toes. An ingrown toenail may happen if you wear shoes that are too tight or too short.

1. Wear comfortable shoes with adequate room for the toes. An ingrown toenail may happen if you wear shoes that are too tight or too short.

2. Use sharp, clean nail clippers to cut toenails straight across. Don't round the corners, a sharp corner of the nail may curl down and dig into the soft flesh of that toe.

3. Trim the nails no shorter than the edge of the toe or the nail itself grow into the flesh.

4. Make sure your feet are always dry and clean.

5. Avoid going barefoot, or wearing shoes without socks. Trauma, such as stubbing the toe or having the toe stepped on, may also cause an ingrown nail.

Ingrown toenails should be treated as soon as they are recognized.

If you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor circulation to your feet, you should pay close attention to your feet. You're at greater risk of complications from an ingrown toenail.

  1. Another great post from The Zestzfulness Team! Thank you for sharing! We cannot stress enough to our patients the importance of paying attention to your feet if you have poor circulation in the feet. Ingrown toenails can cause complications if left untreated.

    Keep up the good work!
