Red Meat has a Negative Impact Body Odour Attractiveness

Axillary body odour is individually specific and potentially a rich source of information about its producer.

Odour individuality partly results from genetic individuality, but the influence of ecological factors such as eating habits are another main source of odour variability.

To find out about how particular dietary components shape our body odour, Havlicek and Lenochova, researchers at Charles University, Prague, tested the effect of red meat consumption on body odour attractiveness.

They used a balanced within-subject experimental design. Seventeen male odour donors were on "meat" or "nonmeat" diet for 2 weeks wearing axillary pads to collect body odour during the final 24 h of the diet.

Fresh odour samples were assessed for their pleasantness, attractiveness, masculinity, and intensity by 30 women not using hormonal contraceptives.

The same procedure was repeated a month later with the same odour donors, each on the opposite diet than before.

Results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the odour of donors when on the nonmeat diet was judged as significantly more attractive, more pleasant, and less intense.

Aroma Incredibellous – I smell….you stink!

There’s a layer of warm air that immediately surrounds our body.

It is called the human thermal plume. This plume originates at the top of your feet, swirls and rises, gathering speed and increasing in volume, staying with you as you move through the day and ascending the length of your torso until it flows from the top of your head.

As the air moves up and away from you, dead cells (also known as rafts), body secretions and bacteria that were present on your skin's surface can also be carried upward. The warm air currents carry these loaded rafts into the surrounding area depositing your odour in the environment.

Human body odour consists of various odour components. Studies examining the volatile components have detected the presence of fatty acids, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, esters, ethers, hydrocarbons, and other substances in body odour(1,2).

Odour individuality can be due to the slight differences in the overall composition of this mix(3).

Do you know that your right armpit may not smell the same as your left?

In many individuals they don’t and this may be due to the increased use of one arm as a result of lateralization. Lateralization refers to the localization of function attributed to either the right or left side of the brain.


Ferdenzi C, Schaal B and Roberts SC1 took this matter further by testing whether odor samples from the right and left axillae provided by right- and left-handed men were perceived differently by female raters.


Participants were 38 males and 49 females, aged 19-35 years. The female raters were selected from those who did not take hormone-based contraception and were estimated to be in the fertile phase of their menstrual cycle.


Fresh odor samples (cotton pads worn underarm for 24 h) were evaluated for attractiveness, intensity, and masculinity, with left and right samples being presented as independent stimuli.


It was found that in left-handers the odour from the axilla corresponding to the dominant side (left) was rated more masculine and more intense than the other side (right). No difference was noticed in right-handers.
