Male Obesity - Low Testosterone Levels

Obese men are more likely than others to have low levels of sex hormone testosterone, claims a new study.

The Hypogonadism in Males (HIM) study was conducted from November 2003 to February 2004 in 95 primary care practices throughout the U.S and involved 2,165 men 45 years or older, of whom 398 were diabetics.

40 percent of the participants were found to have lower-than-normal testosterone readings. The percentage rose to 50 percent among obese men with diabetes.

Results also revealed that as body mass index (BMI) — a relationship of weight-to-height-increased, testosterone levels fell.

“The effect of diabetes on lowering testosterone levels was similar to that of a weight gain of approximately 20 pounds,” says Sandeep Dhindsa, an endocrinology specialist in the UB Department of Medicine and first author on the study.

Many studies all over the world have confirmed the association of low testosterone with diabetes. This is the first to compare prevalence of low testosterone with obesity and diabetes separately and together. The study shows that obesity and diabetes may exert independent influences on testosterone concentrations.

In view of the fact that almost 40% of our Malaysian adult population is either overweight or obese, these observations have profound pathophysiological, clinical, epidemiological and public health implications. CLICK HERE to find what you can do to bring your weight to within healthy limits.

What is Tongkat Ali

Other Names: Eurycoma longifolia, Longjack

Tongkat Ali is a tree native to Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The part of the tree used medicinally is the root.

Why Do People Use Tongkat Ali?

Tongkat Ali was dubbed the "Asian Viagra" in a May 1999 report in the New Sunday Times.

It has been used in Malaysia for many years by men to increase sexual desire, libido, sexual performance and to treat erectile dysfunction.

Tongkat ali appears to work by increasing levels of the hormone testosterone. Testosterone is primarily responsible for the growth and development of male reproductive organs, including the penis, testicles, scrotum, prostate, and seminal vesicles. Normal testosterone levels maintain energy level, mood, fertility, and sexual desire.

Because of its testosterone-enhancing properties, tongkat ali is also used by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass and strength.

Safety

Reported side effects include insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness.

Tongkat ali should not be used by pregnant or nursing women or children.

Because tongkat ali increases testosterone levels it should not be used by men with breast cancer or prostate cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or sleep apnea.

Tongkat ali should not be used by people with weakened immune systems as some evidence suggests it may further weaken immune function.

Drug Interactions

Tongkat ali should not be used by people taking immunosuppressant drugs.

It is especially important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking insulin. Tongkat ali may decrease blood sugar levels.

Zestz for LAUGHS : Interesting Facts

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

(Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

(Now that's more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!)

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.

(In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy)

(I'm still not over the pig.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories a hour.

(Don't try this at home, maybe at work)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.

(Honey, I'm home. What the...?!)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.

(What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day.

(I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet.

(Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

(Hmmmmmm......)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.

(If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.

(Okay, so that would be a good thing)

A cat's urine glows under a black light.

(I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

(I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains

(I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed.

(If they switch, they'll live a lot longer)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

(What about that pig??)

Broccoli May Help Battle Breast Cancer

Eating broccoli just might have benefits in the fight against breast cancer.

A recent study in mice suggests that a compound derived from broccoli keeps stem cells from generating new tumors.

The compound, known as sulphoraphane, "has been studied previously for its effects on cancer, but this study shows that its benefit is in inhibiting the breast cancer stem cells," study co-author Duxin Sun, an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy said.

Sulphoraphane is believed to ‘block’ the conversion of pro-carcinogen chemicals into carcinogens, enhance their breakdown in the body, and also ‘suppress’ the growth of cancerous cells. Several cancers, including breast cancer, are believed to be initiated by the growth of a group of cancer stem cells that continuously renew and change into different cell types. These cancer stem cells are believed to be involved in cancer relapse and resistance to treatment.

The researchers administered sulphoraphane to mice with breast cancer and monitored the number of cancer stem cells in their tumors. They found that the treated mice had fewer of the cells and that they couldn't generate new tumors. Tests on human breast cancer cells in the laboratory resulted in similar decreases in cancer stem cells, they reported.

It's too soon to know if the compound would work in people. Further testing of the anti-cancer properties of sulphoraphane and its potential to target the cancer stem cell population is needed.

But this should not stop us from enjoying broccoli as part of the healthy servings of vegetables and fruits each day in our overall cancer prevention strategy.
